Summary
Nuclear option studied since 1982. November 2006 presidential directive tasked STEG with a techno-economic feasibility study for an NPP; earlier CNSTN/STEG/SONED study (2000-2004, with French CEA and IAEA supervision) assessed nuclear power with water desalination and found it competitive at oil prices above ~USD 38/bbl. STEG prepared a strategic action plan on the IAEA Milestones Guideline, validated by IAEA experts for Phase 1 (April 2009). No decision to proceed; a new nuclear safety law with an independent regulator (ANSN/NCNS) has been drafted.
